YAY FOR CMU (& MY SCHOOL PRIDE-NESS):

The CERT Coordination Center at Carnegie Mellon University, which monitors rogue computer programs, reported 76,404 attack incidents in the first half of this year, approaching the total of 82,094 for all of last year.

(The article is actually about why Microsoft always seems to be under attack from viruses, etc.)

Emma (my roomie) is going to the Head of the Charles crew race!!

The free food offer starts on that day, I believe. I did get handed a flier on campus, actually, so I knew about it. But better than that, seriously, is the fact that many restaurants in Pittsburgh do half-price food after 11 o'clock. (Because with all the college students, they charge half as much but get twice the business. ^_~) Yeah, then I can get AWESOME food for the same price as a (sh*tty) meal at school. Plus I get to chill with people on my floor who decide to go with me. ^_^ It's good times, I tell ya.

Another way to annoy your roommate: constantly make them look at your computer so you can read them pointless supposedly funny parts of your AIM conversations with people they don't know while they have their headphones on and are clearly trying to work. Even better if the 8-page paper they're working on is due in 2 hours. Believe me, it works like a charm.

: P

(She's not really that bad though. We get along so much better than many other roommies. Neither of us are all that good at focusing, that's all.)

Okay, now that Q's warning about the drug has been up long enough, I'll post this, which basically says that Progesterex is an urban legend. HOWEVER, I did not post this earlier because I wanted everyone to take his warning seriously: just because that particular drug may or may not be real does not mean that there is not other stuff out there.

As the article says, "Of course, the most common of all date-rape drugs is still alcohol."

Be careful, guys. Please.

(Note: I have a very special treat coming soon. ^_~)

This may be of interest to Ann, Adam, and Ericka:

Free food?? I think all you have to do is sign up and you're entitled to one free meal delivered to your door. Too bad there's nothing in Texas.

Another cool way to confuse your roommate.

Every time your roommate walks in the door yell "HOORAY!!! YOU'RE BACK!!!" at the top of your lungs while dancing for 5 minutes. Afterward, keep looking at your watch and say "Shouldn't you be going somewhere?"

Listen up all of you young women who drink. Nonono im not going to tell u to stop drinking =P. But listen up this is serious ecspecially those of you who go to UT and Rice...u guys seem to be doing alot. Ya i got this email from Lalla and basically all i want to say is just know wat ure drinking and dont put it down.

A woman at a nightclub (Mumbai) on Saturday night was taken by 5 men, who according to hospital and police
reports, gang raped her before dumping her at Bandstand Mumbai. Unable to remember the events of the
evening, tests later confirmed the repeat rapes along with traces of rohypnol in her blood.

Progesterex, that is essentially a small sterilization pill. The drug is now being used by rapists at parties to rape AND sterilize their victims. Progesterex is available to vets to sterilize large animals. Rumour has it that the Progesterex is being used together with Rohypnol, the date rape drug.

As with Rohypnol, all they have to do is drop it into the girl's drink. The girl can't remember a thing the next morning, of all that had taken place the night before. Progesterex, which dissolves in drinks just as easily, is such that the victim doesn't conceive from the rape and the rapist needn't worry about having a paternity test identifying him months later. The drug's effects ARE NOT TEMPORARY - They are P*E*R*M*A*N*E*N*T

Progesterex was designed to sterilize horses. Any female who takes it WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO CONCEIVE. The weasels can get this drug from anyone who is in the vet school or any university. It's that easy, and Progesterex is about to break out big on campuses everywhere.

Believe it or not, there is even sites on the Internet telling people how to use it.

Please forward this to everyone you know, especially girls. Be Careful when you're out and don't leave your drink unattended. Please make the effort to forward this on to all you know...

Guys, pls inform all your friends and relatives.

MY COMPUTER IS WORKING!!! No more walking to computer labs for me!

Lots of stuff to cover, I'll start with the oldest first.

I was born April 27, 1985.

Re: Steph. 1) No. 2) Ditto.

Texas owned Rice. Big time. It was fun, barring missing all of the 1st quarter standing in line. Printers didn't print tickets. And I must concede that the MOB out-owns the Longhorn marching band, and Rice has cool T-shirts with Tuck Fexas. the MOB dresses up funny, and having marching cello's, kazoos, and violins. But there were a lot of orange shirts in the crowd, even though Rice was hosting.

As for guys and girls...it just depends. Activities that are just better with girls around are dancing, talking, hiding remote controls...and the like. Guys with guys (for me @ UT), we go balling, rifle shooting, computer gaming (still playing Starcraft). AND...depending on how close the guys are, they can talk too.

A huge list of hilarious ways to confuse your roommate. Here's the first one.

Insist that you are vegetarian and protest anytime your roommate eats meat. Then leave "Slim Jim" wrappers all over the floor and clutch your stomach and groan everytime your roommate walks in. If he/she asks about the wrappers, say you have no idea what he/she is talking about.

There's 99 more....

rose @ 1:18 PM [link]

actually i find myself telling my guy friends things that they probably don't want to hear anyways- stuff about my "girl" problems with relationships, etc. in fact, i think i'd be more likely to keep things from "really good girl friends" than from really good guy friends. i think in college it is easier to reach a stage where we are so comfortable with the opposite sex that no one really has to hold back. it's a strange feeling, because i remember i used to keep a lot of things to myself all throughout high school. but here, there are always people around me, asking me "how are you?" and offering to listen. then again, julie is right. guys are great bodyguards, if not always all that qualified physically, then at least we feel a little safer just because they are male...

i've gotten lost a lot too. haha. it's really quite sad, but i'm getting better :D
[]

Angie @ 12:51 PM [link]

it was really nice seeing everyone at rice
i hope y'all are having a great time, even if we kicked your butts : )
while tuck fexas was clever, i really like this slogan:
(imagine words with ut logo) feeling horny?
come on, that's hilarious!

my gosh, i loved going to the football game, and not just cause tom was next to me!
when you're actually there, it's very interesting to watch
a million times better than tv---this applies to most sports in my opinion

as for the guy thing, haven't i already said that a million times before
guys are so much better to talk to sometime because everything is so simple to them
and they are usually more open to things
girls have all this emotional crap and a brain that keeps thinking things over
and we have some traditional aspects that we like to keep
but girls are good for real and deep intellectual conversations
guys don't like to think too hard, they just tell it like it is, just like that, and that's that

i think for making friends, it's not really a gender thing
it's more of a are you an open person thing
someone just has to open their mouth and say something
because in truth everyone wants to talk, we're just scared
especially here when we didn't get to meet and make friends before school started

Yeah, totally: HI JONATHAN!!! ^_^ Glad to have you back.

So far Freshman 15 is only like Freshman 4, but it's growing, hehe. I'm watching what I eat too, but that just means I have a lot to look at. ^_~

I have FINALLY freaking caught up to my work (I think) so I'm going to sleep EARLY AS HELL tonight. (I'm averaging anywhere from 4 to 8 hrs of sleep a night... O_o) Not that I don't still have stuff to do... *glances at to-do list * Um... *glances at bed* Um...

...

I'll work on the birthday list soon, 'kay? Thanks for the great idea Julie.

I'll also work on y'all's "Class of '07" ideas as soon as *excited voice* my new image-processing software comes in!!! (Hehe, can you tell I'm looking forward to it?) Just remember: for it to work, no one can be an architect. (Funny aside: On our freshman orientation t-shirts, the backs all say "CLASS OF 007" EXCEPT for the architects, who have "CLASS OF 007+" hehehe.)

Hope you're all doing well! It's a beautiful rainy day here, and I have no homework due tomorrow, so you can all guess how I am. ^_^

I will have to second the notion of engineering. No english, relatvely little reading, good stuff, 1000 free pages to print. plus, we're playing with robotic legos.

And no cheap shots about large campuses. It just means they have more to offer, that's all. :)

Okay, enough of these online jabs at each other.
GO UT ENGINEERING!!! ANd own those owls in football!

How is everyone's rate of the freshman 15? I'm watching what I eat, but I sure am eating a lot. Gonna go back home this weekend and see how I weigh in.

austin had amazing weather today, i'm talking upper 70s-ish

yeah albert, for your birthday, wouldn't it have been funny if i mailed you a certain $20 bill folded into a boat?

i watched bowling for columbine today
it really makes you think
especially with those comparisons to other countries
so what is it that really makes america gun crazy?
what makes us use the guns?

college advice i've learned: join something, anything--you'll love it and have something to occupy your time; invest in a cell phone with a good plan; get some cash, but try not to shop like me; yeah i totally agree--have a constant supply of water, fruit if you have a fridge; girls need to wash clothes like constantly--or take it home or to someone's home; get to know your area of the dorm; do your homework asap; don't pick up any 23 year olds; ignore creepy people who won't stop making conversations with you; be polite to everyone except the latter; be real, be you

I would be happy to pass on advice to the just now college bound people. Unlike me, please don't forget to bring 2-3 surge protectors. A lot of stuff has to be plugged in, and a little extra mobility wouldn't hurt either.

Lamps are a good thing also.

And, if you are allowed to, a rice cooker would be really cool. A George Foreman Grill works well to. (UT doesn't allow neither of those, and my dorm has no kitchen :( )

Albert. Happy belated??

Who's birthday is up next? I vaguely remember Katherine's b-day around mid fall semester.

BUT, muah ha ha ha ha, a few have started saying "y'all" too!!! *evil grin* I am winning...

Glad you spoke up; miss you. ^_^ And our little trips to Tapioca Express, hehehe. (Well, okay, it was only the once. But it shoulda been more!)

weird, it took me a while, but i know who you're talkng about, did he go to westside or something
if you want to know what i thought of him, well, let's just say based on your opinion, he's changed a lot
(jews are cool, hey i'm taking jewish culture and history, got to support you know)

dude, i suck at lacrosse so much, got to practice
and tv's on halt, until i have more time for it

okay, i think i'm going to the ut v rice game sept 20
so all you rice people, call me and find me so i can see y'all

okay, discuss this: proposition 12, because voting is coming in a couple days
he wants to give immigrants some status that's why he did it, what race is he

as for journalism: the goal is to inform the public of the truth
but what exactly is the truth, is there such thing as too much truth
would the american public be able handle all that knowledge, would they even care

it's been two years, and yet i'll never fully understand why
i hope that another event like sept 11th will never happen again
too many lives were lost for nothing

LOL does he have to for crew??!? OH MAN I am so visiting (and taking TONS of pictures) if that's the case!!

Angie, you're always pretty realistic; you know what you can handle and what you can't. Just trust yourself.
And no, I sure didn't catch Bush's speech. I haven't watched any TV here ($1 movies rock though!). But I will have to watch Alias when it starts up again.
I did read about Gov. Gray Davis giving illegal immigrants in Cali the right to have driver's licenses though. What a load of crap. Why would illegal immigrants have state rights?? (Emergency health care doesn't count; that's just a humane thing.) I swear... *sigh*

About the Bellaire article: I think Mrs. Raby was referring to the class before us. Because they DID have someone go to Yale (Andrea) and Princeton (Diane), whereas we do not. So maybe the BU person is Chao? Plus the graduating class size is like 30 people too small to be ours.

And yeah, discussion rocks my socks!! TALK PEOPLE!! (*sniff sniff* I miss you guys!)
[]

Angie @ 3:08 PM [link]

thanks for the advice, well i'm doing everything, until i can't, don't want to overhaul you know
the paper people like me, so that's going to be great
lacrosse/sports will be fun, and tv, well i have to make time

kristan, that was the bast damn article ever
i'm actually printing it and pasting it on my dorm wall

did anyone catch bush's presidential address last night
based on my poor notetaking, while i was working on my pages:
he was talking about how next month and the following they will reconstruct afghanistan, iraq
a lot of sentimental stuff about how our soldiers are the best, they've done so much, even included a letter
then dropping in the supposed 87 billion price tag
with all the nations able to help, england france....etc
iraq will restructure with a constitution and free elections
based on a timetable we give them to follow
one quote he said in first third of his speech that caught my attention was something about
terrorrists...attacked the civilized world

Sorry guys, this is gonna be a HUGE post, but I thought it was pretty interesting (and at some parts amusing):

Sept. 4, 2003, 8:46PM

White flight in age of 10 percent

By RICK CASEY
Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle

CALL IT THE NEW white flight.

Traditional white flight abandoned urban schools in the wake of integration or in the face of influxes of immigrants.

The new white flight is different.

Parents are seeking private schools or searching for magnet programs in schools other than their attendance zones not because they think their school is deteriorating or dangerous.

They're worried their children can't compete.

They're not fleeing the "worst" schools, but the "best."

Welcome to the world of the 10 percent rule. That's the alternative to affirmative action at Texas universities backed by then-Gov. George W. Bush.

Instead of achieving diversity through weighted formulas, the University of Texas and others are required to admit students who graduated from the top 10 percent of their class, whether it was the lowest-performing school in Texas or the highest.

So now some parents, afraid their children won't rank in the top 10 percent at their local high school, are seeking alternatives.

One such mother has a bright new ninth-grader with a younger sister in middle school. She chose not to send her older girl to Bellaire High School, one of the area's highest performers. One consideration, she said, was the 10 percent rule.

"Frankly, I don't think she can compete with the Asians," she said.

School officials are reluctant to discuss ethnic differences. Bellaire Principal Tim Salem says he doesn't have statistics on how many Asians are in the school's top 10 percent.

But the school does attract a lot of Asian students -- 17 percent of its student body, the highest of any Houston ISD high school.

Councilman Gordon Quan says he knows of Asian families who keep their homes elsewhere in Houston but rent apartments in the Bellaire neighborhood because they see it as the best school.

This may help explain why school officials say they haven't noticed any drop-off in class size from white families going elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Bruce Walker, vice president for admissions at the University of Texas, says Asians are thriving under the 10 percent rule. They make up an estimated 18 percent of this year's freshman class, but were just 3 percent of high school graduates last spring.

Walker said the importance of the 10 percent rule has grown. Last year 52 percent of incoming freshman were admitted under the 10 percent rule. This year the number jumped to an estimated 69 percent of all admissions. Ten-percenters were three-quarters of Texas freshmen admitted.

Whatever the role Asian students play, it is indeed tough to make it into Bellaire's top 10 percent. Salem says parents frequently express concern. Bill Lawson, former principal and now area superintendent, said he heard such concerns from parents "on a daily basis."

Last year's graduating class of 681 featured 41 National Merit semifinalists.

"Last year we had 33 students in the fall with 4.0 or higher grade point averages who were in the second quartile," said head counselor Shirley Raby. She explained that advanced-placement classes were weighted so an "A" was worth more than the normal four points.

That means that 33 students with perfect grades weren't in the top quarter of the class, much less the top 10 percent.

But Raby said unless parents are dead set on getting their children into the University of Texas, they shouldn't be so concerned.

"Last year we sent two to Harvard, one to Yale, nine or ten to Stanford, ten to twelve to Rice, two to Duke, one or two to MIT and one to Princeton," she said. Some of those weren't in the top 10 percent.

One, she said, was turned down by UT-Austin but received a scholarship to Boston University.

"The universities know what kind of school we are and take that into account," she said.

Raby said parents who see Bellaire as a rich kids' school, or one that caters only to its brightest students, are wrong.

"A quarter of our students are from families that qualify for reduced-price or free lunches," she said, adding that the district lines include low-income immigrant areas.

And, she said, students are admitted into any class they want to take and are served attentively no matter their academic level.

But the mother mentioned above remains skeptical.

"I don't know, but I've heard that if you're not in the top 10 percent you don't get the coddling you get if you are," she said.

And so her child is in private school.

For everyone with desktops and want to impress your roommate on how super cool you are: Just as there's an ethernet card to flow at warp speed data from the port to your computer, so does a tv tuner card allow cable television to flow from the cable jack to your computer. The card ought to come with software to allow you to record and at what time and and filter images and do cool stuff. If you get a really high end card, you can get a remote control (ultimate definition of coolness).

If whoever chooses to get one, it does require opening that plastic or metal case and unscrewing things. Don't worry, it's not hard, don't get some IT store charge $10-$20 for 10 minutes of work. Or you can hook up with some local computer gamer friend and get him (or her) to do it.

Just a humorous update on my health: 2nd twisted ankle in 3 months.
