good call on the DeadAIM
[]
quentin @ 10:00 PM [link]
woooohoooo party time
[]
justin @ 9:10 PM [link]
A Program that I am pretty sure everyone here would find useful: DeadAim is free for you to download. The current version on the website costs $5, and since we all dislike paying anything for anything, there's an older version of DeadAim free for download.
This is only a 600KB program (maybe a 2 second download), and it one-ups AIM by being
"An unobtrusive free add-on that works within AIM, DeadAIM can tweak transparency, keep all conversations in a single tabbed interface, log sessions and events (such as log-on and log-off) separately for each buddy, and hide elements of the main AIM window. In addition, DeadAIM can pop up a notification when buddies sign on, sign off, set "away" messages, or come back."
In other words, everything is more organized and cooler looking. AND...you can CLONE it so that two screen names can be logged in at once on one computer.
Sweeet mercy Quentin just posted 14 seconds before me.

One word i can never hear the same again, "nippy". Who made that word so common that even our parents are using it?

I think I had my 4th thanksgiving meal of the weekend. Interestingly enough, the 4th meal was a dinner party where I met Albert's parents. Too bad Albert missed out on some good food and a movie. =P

I kept getting calls from people too early. Then i decided to get up and we met some folks at fudruckers, hung out, then went to dings? did some gymnastics, then watched scarface or parts of it, then everyone had to do some sort of family stuff, so then met up again at 9 to watch rockets game, then went to IHOP for some food. Yup

Ericka's BACK!!! Well, for now.
Hey Ericka, what you said is extremely well put. I can definitely relate. And reminded me of stuff that makes me want to refine what I said earlier.
I'm full of questions about my faith, and I earnestly seek out the answers. I have found many answers to my nearly unending questions. However, eventually everything boils down to faith, because I don't think God supplied the answer to every single question. Sort of takes away from his mystery. And for all the questions that I have found answers to (and the reason why I believe)...the answers are relative. I see the question, I see the answer and its supporting evidence. Just because the evidence is persuasive enough for me to believe doesn't mean someone next to me will be convinced of the same.
But in the end, it is not what you know, but who you know. The relationship is greater than the knowledge. Done with the heart, not the brain. Learned this firsthand...twice.
Commercialization of religion: It rubs me the wrong way. Something about it heightens my suspicion about it, but I really can't describe in words ...
Wow...thanksgiving break is almost over. I was reading my trusty Readers Digest, and I found an interesting bit of info.
"A Cornel University study found that freshmen gained about 4 pounds in the first 12 weeks of school. Over the course of a school year, that can mean a 12 pound gain"
STUPID STUPID STUPID I GAINED 5 POUNDS ALREADY. *sigh* This school year is looking bleak.

Yeah, guys, I really need to know the final plans for Saturday, 'cause I'm leaving that afternoon/evening, so I wanna try and see you guys at lunch. It'd be really helpful if lunch could be at noon or one; past that and I don't think I can make it. So whoever's arranging this stuff now, wanna share the time/location with everyone? Thankya muchly!! ^_^
I'll post opinion stuff when I get back to CMU.
Love Actually was cute. ^_^ Thanks to Mary and Angie for coming to see it with me!!
It actually could have been better -- they tried to follow too many stories, they left too many unended, and a particular two were incredibly unnecessary and dumb. But overall, that is THE cutest little boy I've ever seen; Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman were great (as usual); I heart Colin Firth (and Hugh Grant, and DEFINITELY Rodgrigo Santoro *GRIN*); and Keira Knightly is gorgeous. All big duhs, I know, but I had to say it.
And that website is still one of THE coolest ever!!
(Oh hey, Thomas Sangster, the boy that plays Sam, is a cousin of Hugh Grant. Interesting. And ADORABLE!! "Come on then! Let's go get the shit kicked out of us by love!" Teeheehee.)
[]
justin @ 12:33 PM [link]
Oh yes, Mary's question shouldn't be lost in the shuffle. ... Are there any plans in the works today??
[]
justin @ 11:16 AM [link]
Wow. Really wow. Good questions by both Angie and Mary. Makes me want to think...but whenever I think about these issues I tend to think for a really long time.
So I'll try not to think so long this time.
Again, trying to stay in order:
I think the purpose of a youth group/singing is to create a time period where believers can just retract from their hectic schedule and join in communal worship. It's sort of your individual "down time" with God, and you are spending your "down time" among others.
And I think the focus of that youth group's fellowship is not about being a better person. If the whole point of being a Christian was to commit less sins...then I don't think it does any good. What hope is there in that? If that youth group were similar my Chinese Bible Study youth group, I think I can safely say that those students don't only believe in God, but they all treasure God, they are trying to develop a strong relationship with Him. The group fellowship and singing is just a reflection of how much value God is in their lives.
My view of church is sort of the same thing. I don't think it says anywhere in the Bible that you have to go to church. But I go to my church because it fulfills my needs. I need help with my relationship with God, I need help growing wise, I have a need for brotherhood/sisterhood, and there are people four years above me, who have gone through what I've gone through, and they have nuggets of wisdom that I earnestly seek.
And what's coming up next applies to everything, not just religion: Don't ever blindly follow. You have to question, you have to understand what the other side is saying.
As a Christian, I believe some guy (Jesus) died 2000 years ago to redeem our sins, but came back to life without the wonders of medical technology. How foolish would I be to not question that??
Angie said something interesting in her last line.
"and I won't take away from what you believe, what your truth is".
A relevant question that I feel deserves to be raised is: Is truth relative to the person, or is there an absolute truth out there? I think the responses should be interesting.

sidenote for the drinking: it doesn't even have to be religion
i've noticed that a lot of people who never drank in high school, not because of religion, just cause it never came up--drink themselves stupid because they never did it before and couldn't handle it and thought it was like the thing to do and didn't know better and when to stop and keep drinking themselves under
people just don't know better, there are other things to do even if you think everyone is doing it and only it
and you don't have to prove anything, who the hell wants that reputation
job resume: oh yeah, i was named 'the ultimate drunk' in college, gee that will get somewhere...
i'm not here to stand all high and mighty and point fingers, but i think that's just damn stupid
and yes, i'm going to go all parental on everyone
i personally seldom drink, it doesn't taste good and why drink some nasty cheap beer anyways is my thinking
if i ever drink any alcoholic beverage, be it wine or some mixed drink, i only take a few sips and that's it
i truly believe to have fun, even at a drunken party, you do not need alcohol
i won't even say it's peer pressure because from what i've noticed, nobody forces you to
i think it's people who plastered the thinking, i should cause everyone does in their head that makes most people drink anyways
to most, i think they see it as the logical next step, because dude where in college
the problem i think is that college students drink to get drunk
seriously, dude you can also hurt yourself, or end up doing something you didn't want to do
it happens and i bet you've seen it too
you don't need five cups/drink/shots/whateveryoucallit, you need to limit yourself
and you don't need to get sloshed/wasted/thowed/whateveryoucallit, that's dumb
just please drink responsibly
it is interesting though, when is sheltering too much
i think it may not even lie with being sheltered
sometimes it lies with what kind of relationship you have with your parents
and what they allow or do not allow
and what you share with them that morally changes your outlook on things
as for religion, it's faith, it's a way to believe
i know some people have heard/read this:
i attended a christian hope youth group one night because a guy in my jewish class (believe it or not) asked me to
associating myself as a christian, i thought, why not, it might be good
honestly, it wasn't for me, i've come to realize for myself that sometimes religion is restrictive
i believe in God, but i do not believe that being present at church proves anything
i just didnt see why i must be in a group and singing has to break out and people have to get bent on an evangelistic fervor
or better yet, at another youth group, say oh lord jesus after every sentence in the same evangelistic fervor
does that prove anything, does that make me a better person? i dont' think so
i also feel that religion subconsciously subjects anyone to look down on others
just like some minority organizations...i won't get into that
also (mine) makes me look down upon yourself, as if i am a sinner
and what good does that really do for me
but it's all faith, and what you believe is true to you
and i won't take away from what you believe, what your truth is

justin @ 2:30 PM [link]
Trying to answer the question in order without being too choppy or stepping on too many toes about it:
Should she have had enough willpower? That makes it sound like she wanted to drink but wouldn't do so because of the restrictions of her religion. If that was the case, I think if her desire was to drink, the decision was to boil down to how badly she wanted to give in, or how badly she wanted to abide by the moral code of her religion. Granted, the situation might have made her desire that much stronger.
What IS religion? I can only speak for my "religion" (Christianity) because I would definitely butcher the answer if I tried to generalize religion as a whole.
What kind of faith breaks the hardest of hearts. What kind of religion gives people a joy that never diminishes, a love that never fails, an incomprehensible strength. Is there any religion that makes a convict, charged for killing so many people, repent and make a 180 in his life even though hes on death row?.. a religion that gives men and women the courage and the audacity to hold bible studies in their houses, risking torture and death if caught?
If you ask me, I dont think any religion could ever have that kind of impact. Its a relationship...a personal relational friendship with God, the One who compels people to change their hearts, to follow Him with a perseverance that seems not diminishable. The term "religion" seems to denote a tradition or ritual one follows, or a set of moral code to follow, some system/belief you follow because your parents followed it. From my experience, my "religion" is so much more than that. It gives me purpose.
And (also) from my experience, Christianity can easily be defended if one is aware of the evidence that points toward its validity. It can be done, and if I had maybe an hour or two engaging in a verbal conversation with someone, we could develop a mutual understand of each other's view and clear up some questions that haven't ever been adequately answered.
Or I could spend a whole day tryign to type up the depth of my knowledge on this topic. But I won't. BEcause I am still sleep deprived. And hungry.
#20: Eerily, I am finding UT equivalents to EVERYONE I knew in high school. Both in the way they behave and their personality, but also in their looks. Like they have sisters/brothes I didn't know about.

Hehehe, but no, really, that was a beautiful paragraph you wrote there. And the thing is, I don't think that's just what "men" do; I think any honorable woman would be defined the same way (replacing pronouns where appropriate, of course).

Hey guys, do you think we need to call ahead for bowling on Friday, or are we good just going? (Palace Lanes at 4:30?) And what about reservations? We don't need 'em for Fuddruckers, do we?
What's the final head count on this, anyway? Who's coming? (By the way, y'all can all invite any of your/our friends to come! This is not a Cnet exclusive -- anyone is welcome!!)
Note of interest:
Anyone at Rice have Prof. Hulet?
"The importance of this work is in what's to come," Dr. Randall G. Hulet, a professor of physics at Rice University in Houston, said. "This is going to open up new directions in which to explore phenomena like superconductivity, but in much simpler, easier-to-understand systems."

The Science of Religion: Researchers study how religious beliefs influence people's lives.
This is a feature story on the UT website. It's only going to be up for a couple more days, but it's an interesting read, and applies a little to our discussions.
My short, evidence-lacking view to AA: You choose between a lesser of two evils. Possible rampant racism without AA, or possible not-so-rampant but still unfair racial discrimination and reverse discrimination.
The man question: My thoughts concerning that are long, deep, and intricately complex. My personal short, detail-lacking answer (for now) to the question "what does it mean to be a man": A Real man is a man after God's own heart. See how the above link comes into play in my posts?
Happy Birthday Kristan.

[]
quentin @ 11:37 AM [link]
Well greg im gonna respond to u,
First off we have to understand wat affirmative action is because u cant say its unfair for white people, because if u add white women to physically disadvantage, they have taken more advantage of affirmative action then all blacks combined.
Secondly the reason i support affirmative action is because no matter wat u think racism and sexism exist, as far as college if htey didnt have that little gender or race bubble affirmative action could be dispelled as far as it comes to race, but since they insist on the little bubble then it stays. But then u get in the situation of interviews where the admission sees the race and gender of person and that can lead to discrimination. Also pertaining to college affirmative action isnt just race, if you come from a certain location thats poorer than other some colleges award you with points, thus affirmative action. Also the whole legacy thing, thats how caucasians actively recieve a type of affirmative action, since they were the only ones allowed to go to most colleges they get points in some cases if their parents or relatives went to the college previously.
Looking at the job point of view, i honestly believe that if it were not for affirmative action, there would be no female police officers, no female firemen, no bussiness woman, because lets face it the world is controlled by men (and if u dont believe that im sorry but its true).
So at the end of the day the proponets of affirmative action ask, is it guaranteed i will not be discriminated against when it comes to applying for college and a job because of race or sex. And the answer is NO.
And the majority of AA dosnt have to deal with underqualified its equally quallifed, but in some cases like Mich ure right it can be underqualified, but same goes for sports, u play a sport u get points.
So until there is an end to all discrimination AA will be around for a while. Because remeber the main reason AA started was that people overquallified for jobs and colleges were not getting in because of race and sex, so they tried to think of a way so that the people who did qualify did get in, but now it is flawed. So AA does need to be changed and albert is right its a messy issue, but hard work isnt the answer if a college chooses not to let you in because of race, and yes it has happened in the past and racism is not evn close to being gone in this country.
So talk to me

first off, in texas a gay marriage dosnt have to be respected because the fact that texas has legally defined marriage as between a man and a woman. This has already been discussed in mr. clarks class. Texas does not have to ackowledge the joining of the two people if it dosnt follow thier law.
Secondly i wasnt talking about kids who have foster paretns, i was talking about the majority of kids who never experience foster parents. Again the majoirty of kids dont have foster parents who are in the foster care system. So the kids with foster parents are lucky and sorry for not clarifying, but i wasnt talking about them. How did I jab at the foster care system, its doing its job, but its been proven that kids in the foster system have a harder time in life after they are 18.
So ya we have worn this topic out
[]
justin @ 8:43 PM [link]
Wow, Wylie. Your words are far too kind, much more than I really deserve. But...what is a 'g' that you referred me to?
I'm not as cool with the Episcopal church as the rest of you may be. But that issue can be discussed later down the road.
And I kind have lost where the topic has developed to, but I would like to say that I certainly didn't know what people had to do in order to become foster parents. I know I'm guilty for taking a jab at the foster care system, and I shouldn't have generalized the foster care system to be so poor.

To adam:
How can people get hard evidence for homosexuals adopting children if they arent allowed to in the first place. If you were to have your way, we would never find out because its against the law. And also to the thing about marriage and homosexuals, i doubt homosexuals will ever be allowed to be married in texas in my lifetime, so if u want extensive studies its almost impossible. Secondly, you are still saying a kid has a better chance in an orphanage than they do with two loving people who will have to go through a shit load of screening and can provide a good life for a child. And the articles u brought about the children, all of those kids had messed up parents who were still in the process of dating, or just experienced a divorce, meaning the kids just didnt pop up out of thin air, there had to have been a heterosexual act. So if u want to take that route, im sure u can find alot more messed up kids who hate their parents in the projects of NYC then u could with kids who hate their parents because they are gay. And if u read wat they said, it was all due to other peoples non acceptance of their parents, and to me those kids seem like they are forming perfectly logical thoughts and seem all to be straight. Wow they seem like they are ok to me, just afraid of the scrutiny of other people that i mentioned.
[]
Kristan @ 5:20 PM [link]
If you were to look at this from a different perspective, it is just like racism. Do you know how many people looked down on interracial relationships? The interracial kids about 50 years ago were treated bad, but they had to take the step, just like the children of two same sex will have to make a step. Of course its going to be uncomfortable but neccesary.
HALFIES RULE!!!!!!!!! *GRIN*
[]
quentin @ 2:13 PM [link]
Time for Q to drop a little knowledge...
Ok guys as u see the issue isnt really gay adoption, its more on the lines of "is it right to be gay". Because as far as im concerned there are plenty of heterosexual parents that arent the best influence for their children. But again who are we to judge.
As far as the christian thing, the Bible states that gay is bad, but then the bible also states dont judge, and almost all sins are held equal, so avid christians who protest against being gay are not following the word of God.
Just because this is a predominant christian society, does that give us the right to decide everything for everyone else? In the country and like adam said, ya it does. I think thats wrong but its true. So in response to wylie, this country is already in hell we are just beggining to get out of the flame.
And for all of you who keep reffering to the mother and father thing. FUCK THAT! These kids are being adopted in the first place. That means two heterosexuals were being irresponsible, and saying that a orphanage will produce better results than two loving, caring parents is ludicrous. Atleast give them a chance. The reasons why gays cant adopt now is because of bigotry, open ure eyes thats the only real reason. So again will u let ure own opinion and the opinions of the majority limit the minority? Open your eyes.

porn
okay, i don't get it, but it's there
when do you define art vs pornography
or could you argue that pornography is a form of art
and what would you classify soap-operas or better yet romance novels as
do you think we should put bans or some form of blocker on certain websites for their nude content to protect children from viewing bad things on the internet (net nanny programs or what not)
and what websites could be classified as 'bad' sites for young children not to view
and how much of it is on television screen/movies, should that also be restricted
?
[]
Angie @ 1:58 PM [link]
okay, wow
so i'm assuming most of y'all heard what happened in massachusetts
they ruled that civil marriage licenses in the state must be made available to same-sex couples in 180 days
that civil marriage is one of two persons, not man and woman
adoption should occur like this: the couples (whatever the sexual orientations may be) who are most qualified should adopt, that means they are loving and caring and have stability with their life and sufficient means/income
i'm not going to lie, i use to think that i would be somewhat uncomfortable around lesbians
i never once thought that they should be denied any rights though
i just thought that it was strange for me, but truthfully now, it's not
i have been friends with lesbians and it doesn't bother me one bit
they're no differenty than anyone else (not that i thought they were)
i guess what i'm trying to get at is that yoru sexual orientation should not be the most defining point of who you are and how much you love
i think i might have mentioned this before:
in the past, people who are left-handed were also discriminated against
you were pushed to be right-handed
the comparison is that now, statistically, the number of left-handed people in america is almost equal to the number of gays in america
currently being left-handed is accepted
wylie does bring up a good point though, children of gay parents are not exactly always treated right
society is still stuck in an anti-gay marriage sentiment
-----
side note: forever means both people agree to make it work, because they love each other so much and will, forever
[]
justin @ 2:43 AM [link]
Wow, this reminds me of college freshman orientation. We had this inner-circle/outer-circle dealy where basically the OA would throw out a statement, and volunteers give a scale 1-10 in agreement/disagreement and support their position.
I'll try to stay on the topic, but I feel that I need to let everyone know what mindset I'm in when addressing this topic (and my religious/spiritual background contributes a lot to it). I believe God created man and woman to be perfectly complementary, perfectly suitable for each other, and that God's purpose of marriage is to unite two people, man and woman, to become one whole [us guys need some tenderness too :) ]. I don't believe gay marriages are within God's will.
However, for me to approach this issue objectly creates something sticky because most "sins" are easy to define as "sin" because of the negative consequence as a result of the sin (cheating, killing, stealing are pretty clear cut examples of this). However, when it comes to homosexuality...it's hard for me to justify with concrete facts that society suffers as a result of it. All I can say is that I have faith that God knows what's best, so if He says man is perfect only for woman, and woman perfect for only man, I trust He's right.
Okay, sorry, but that had to be said. Objectively, I don't believe someone's sexual orientation takes away from their integrity as a person. There are plenty of examples of straight "Christians" who (unfortunately) lack in character completely, and all the while plenty of examples of gay people having great reps, with nothing bad to say against them. As parents, they can provide just as much care, love, and quality time as their straight counterparts. And I agree, I don't believe it's the fact of having two mothers or fathers that affects the children as much as the ridicule and teasing these children may receive from their peers. That's going to hurt much more. I think it would be better for a child to be adopted by genuine parents providing genuine love rather than jumping from foster home to foster home.

I might be back in time for clubbin, but you'll have to check wit greg on that one since he's my ride back to H-town. But anything on saturday's good for me.
[]
Kristan @ 6:47 PM [link]
Hahaha, poor Ann! *hug* It's okay, CMU doesn't play in any important leagues, snotty-ivy or not. (And our band marches in kilts. So yeah, dorkiness abounds.)
Wylie, we're referring to the 28th.
And so it looks like this is what we're thinking:
- bowling in the late afternoon (4 ish? 5 ish?) at... Palace Lanes?
- mass dinner together (7 ish? 8 ish?) at... Fuddruckers?
- clubbing (which I can't go to, sorry guys, even though I'll be old enough finally!) at... Roxy? Numbers? TTown?
Of course, those are the plans given that only like 5 people have given input. Speak up everyone else so we know what you would rather do or can't do or whatever!!! ^_^
[]
rose @ 1:57 PM [link]
i agree with bowling and clubbing and being very noisy. DAMN it's gonna be fun to dance with everyone there again. i must admit it's just not the same without quentin. lol. don't worry, people-who-can't-be-there, we'll take tons of pictures :D or at least i will. :D
ps- ann, i was talking to my freshman seminar classmates about how you called me up to ask me how i pronounce "mountain" and "written"-- then one girl was like, wait, she goes to brown? and i was like yeah. and she was like.. "is that who we played against in that first basketball game?" and i was like "yeaah.." and she gave me a look and she was like "ooooooooh... i seee... " hahaha! daniel has pictures of the airballs that brown made...
[]
quentin @ 11:23 AM [link]
im up for saturday or friday, i want to go bowling then clubbing. I want to go to a very casual place to eat because i think we will be a little noisey. So to the people ive talked to so far they want to do bowling and clubbing/somewhere with music.
[]
Kristan @ 10:30 AM [link]
Nice article, Michael.
So, you guys, I was thinking about Friday during the day/afternoon for our massive get-together. Does that work? Where should we do it and/or what should we do for it? (Tapioca was a half-joke, though it is obviously a possibility.) I think maybe getting reservations -- if necessary -- at an eating place would be good, 'cause then it's good food & good company. BW3s in the Village is another option. Any other ideas (for a food place, or a different activity -- like bowling? - or anything else at all?

Kristan @ 6:21 PM [link]
Grace, is that color better? (Btw, what's your screenname 'cause it's still not in the list?)
Mona Lisa Smile looks like Dead Poets' Society, but with chicks. But that's probably just 'cause of the school uniforms. Gotta love Dominic West too (male lead in this movie, guy Renee Zellweger killed in Chicago). Mother/daughter thing sounds cute -- Winter Break? -- and yeah, haha, guys should be allowed to send their mothers/sisters.
I didn't mean for the ranks to imply anything -- I'm with Olivia & Grace and everyone else: THEY MEAN JACK. (Although CMU DOES have craploads of work. Like, seriously guys...)
Okay, and an interesting math forward I got, 'cause I'm a loser and I like stuff like this:
OUT TO DINNER MATHEMATICS
1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have dinner out. (Try for more than once but less than 10.)
2. Multiply this number by 2. (Just to be bold.)
3. Add 5. (Just because.)
4. Multiply it by 50. (You may want your calculator for the next few.)
5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1753; if you haven't, add 1752.
6. Now subtract the four digit year that you were born.
You should have a three digit number.
The first digit of this was your original number
(How many times you want to eat out each week.)
The next two numbers are...
YOUR AGE! (Oh YES, it IS!!!!!)
THIS IS THE ONLY YEAR (2003) IT WILL EVER WORK, SO SPREAD IT AROUND WHILE IT LASTS. IMPRESSIVE, ISN'T IT?

for all the girls:
we should do a mother&daughter movie thing!!
on december 19th mona lisa's smile comes out
it's that one with julia roberts, julia stiles, kristen dunst, etc.
and revolves around the choice of family life vs education/career
i think we should all go see it together
any takers??

hmm, maybe i should have gone to emory
or better yet, considered dartmouth more
how can you really rank colleges
yes some are better than the other
but it's really the people that make the place
and what you make of it for yourself
(although, everyone should hook 'em)
-what's this girls are like male writers and guys like female writers??
-get together on thanksgiving break is a smashing good idea
i think we should have a gingerbread house making party---then eating the candy later!
-ahh, no one wants to break a heart, there's no right way
and if it ends, there's no happy way
-i'm seeing thoroughly modern millie dec 26th!!
"if someone likes u and u dont like them. Take them to a shower, get wet and then tell them, itll make it less painful... "
ha ha ha, i love this, this is great
question one: what do you get your boyfriend/girlfriend's parents for the holidays?
question two: if you like someone, but they like someone else, should you pursue them?
or what if the person they're with doesn't give them everything and you know you can, would you still do it?
question three: would you want to be smarter, have a better memory, or be the most beautiful person in the world?

Awww, I think UT dropped a couple spots. I vaguely remember UT barely cracking the top 50 last year.
The schools that take the top spots among us: Duke and Stanford, both sitting nicely at #5.
And what I find amusing is that Cornell > Rice > Brown, in that order.
[]
Kristan @ 2:57 PM [link]
Because we can never really escape the statistics: new US News overall college rankings for 2004.
And my school is ranked #3 in the nation for "Their Students Never Stop Working" by Princeton Review. Yeeeeah, read it, and weep. (For me.)
Nice analogy, Mary.
I'd rather have someone be brutally honest with me. *shrug* I guess I'm a quick bandaid person.
Hey Ann, I don't have real food or tapioca either!! Boo to the Northeast. >_< (Actually, haha, Princeton Review ranks my school 19th in the nation in the "Is It Really Food?" category.)
Haha, Jessica Alba is a HOTTIE. I definitely want to see that movie, for the dancing and for the hot chica ^_~, but I doubt it'll be good. I'm thinking "Glitter." *sigh* But hey, at least our Dark Angel is acting again. (Now where's her hottie husband??!?)
[]
rose @ 11:20 AM [link]
hey, i'm female and i got a female score. *shrugs*
tapioca! that's a grand idea, kristan :]
we should gang up on ann and make her come home for the thanksgiving break. *teleports ann to houston*
We should all go see Honey after finals during winter break :D heehee. and then afterwards, go dancing, cuz i am SURE that ya'll will feel like gettin down after watching jessica alba do her thing.
hey, i'm attracted to olivia's waving hips..
(? adam ?) haha
what kind of person would you consider a heartbreaker?
seems like there's no way out, because olivia says "..it got here and now i have to break his (or her) heart..." -- but how can you win, when 1) breaking if off at that moment counts as breaking a heart but 2) leading them on and then breaking it off later counts as breaking a heart too, and 3) leading them on forever counts as a heartbreaker as well.
so how do you let down/reject a guy gently?
[]
justin @ 12:05 AM [link]
Actually, the algorithm said I was a female with a score 1161 to 987. Just entered 727 words worth of past blog entries. Apparently I like using the term "so".
I really don't know when I'm coming back. Maybe leaving Austin on Wednesday morning, leaving Houston Sunday afternoon, possibly Monday morning?? But I think it would be great if we all got together that weekend (after spending time with our family, of course).

Ann/Q: yeah, I've seen that genie before, and I didn't find it to be accurate at all. Or else I'm fairly masculine... *weird look*
John: I haven't seen the movie, but it got positive reviews from the NYTimes.
Rose: I agree with pretty much everyone else -- it would be a bit flattering for a brief moment in time, but then you just feel bad. Basically, that's how any unequal relationship goes.
Who's going home for Thanksgiving, and when?
(I'm coming in Tues. night, the 25th, and leaving Sat. night, the 30th. Odds are my parents are going to want me... oh, ALL the time? But I'm just curious -- maybe we could kill 30 birds with one stone and have a massive get-together for everyone who'll be in town. Hahaha, like a trip to... Chinatown? For tapioca? *GRIN* Just an idea. *halo*)

Hey Wylie, she is adorable! And by adorable, I mean beautiful. I'm sure that's true inside and out; congrats man. ^_^
(Just so you know, I shrunk the pictures so (a) they wouldn't make the page side-scroll, and (b) so they wouldn't take up as much space/memory.)
To answer Ann's question: I think time can only do so much, depending on the wound. Just like physical scars, some will fade away entirely, and some will show forever. It also depends on what you do to take care of it -- like applying Neosporin, you've gotta be willing to heal it. I think there's a song lyric: time helps but it doesn't cure.
(Yup, just looked it up: yay for BBMAK! Hehe, Julie, girl, I know you got me on that one.)
And Rose, I know I already told you this at LJ, but roseinmidair or tigerose are both great names -- I just think tigerose is more consistent. Either way, I'm super excited! ^_^

short answer to Ann's question: No. Time numbs the pain from the wound, but just because you don't feel it doesn't mean the wound is healed. Healing requires initiative, action, on someone's part.
Okay, off to class.

rose @ 10:40 AM [link]
hi!
kristan, i subscribe to a girl's mailing list called "good things and everything else" that sends out a semi-regular list of happy things in life. today, the list included:
* Love Actually, the film. the scrappy boy with the wild eyes and big heart
did i mention that you really should go see it?
1. Q: i agree though-- despite everyone's crammed schedule, there should be at least once a day that you reflect on calling someone up or writing someone. i've been trying to write a card/letter a day, it's a happy thing. but i think that the fact that so many people have been posting here, that's a really great thing :D
2. hokey pokey! that's awesome! i love the hokey pokey. although i never thought about doing it for 30 minutes a day in my room. i kinda do that, except i dance to Ludacris? lol. everyone should take a dance class. it's so great. even if you *think* you can't dance, it's great exercise and it beats a treadmill. and when it's not so cold, me and june have tanktop & underwear parties in our room. and dance. it's fun. hehe
3. ann--- i agree that time heals a lot of wounds, but not completely. some things stay forever-- the pain may subside, but it's still a part of you. and.. you've never seen that spiderman?!! lol there is a song that goes to it too. *makes a face* oh, and yeah, hehe i discussed overalls with matt. i decided that a cowboy hat would do, it doesn't have to be an actual straw hat. lol.. but i guess matthew's country enough-- you should see him sing to country songs *grin* it's cute. er.. dayum sexy.
4. matthew- tapioca!!!
5. Wylie-- yeah SEE it is impossible to choose ONE song :D (that is soooo cute, about erin!!!!! i love michelle branch, i have pictures of her from Earth Day Fest.) yaaay! good taste in music. and i do want to hear about erin!
6. honestly, i'm pretty sure i've changed. maybe not in a huge-noticeable way, but in subtle ways that have made me stronger. sam has always mentioned how independent i was when he first met me, and how much i moved away from that. i think i'm somewhat recovering, and that i'm at least a little stronger now. then again, i've gone through a lot of shit here :] so i don't know. but i have a great guy to help me out so i am lucky. very very lucky.
but i agree with justin, there are so many people here that are my role models-- incredible people who are so friendly and willing to help you out and talk to you about your future rather than themselves and their accomplishments. it's great stuff.
whew. okay i'm late for my class (which i have a quiz in) see quentin, i make sacrifices to keep in touch with yall!
[]
quentin @ 9:45 AM [link]
Ann i understand the extracurriculars, but again even with all of those, u ureself still have time to post frequently and you say you spend alot of time writing and responding to emails. All I ask for is 30 minutes a day. Thats not much time at all but it can do alot.

justin @ 1:06 AM [link]
Regarding change in college. I think we're all like play-doh. Or clay. Let's go with clay. We first really seeing what the world is like in high school. That's where our first real mold comes from. So we come into college having this mold set from high school, on our way to be hardened into the final form, but as clay we're not completely dried out, so we're still moldable, teachable, receptive to what's out there. After four years of this, we can still change, but we'll be pretty entrenched into who we are.
So, to personalize this, I think UT is an awesome place for personal growth. There are so many living examples of who I strive to be. I start thinking "Wow, this person was once a young freshman, and look at him/her now." Models who are worthy of imitation on more levels than just grades, personality, and hobbies/interests/passions. And, for all of us, I have this hope that once we've been through the fire this world calls college, we can go from some random lumps of clay into fine china.
This has been said time and time again, but it deserves to be reiterated. We're all so fortunate to have known each other through high school. We all see the different admirable qualities in each other and aim to be at least half as good as that person in that particular aspect.

Hmmm why do ppl say they dont have enough time in college, lately ive been conversing with ppl and hear that some ppl dont have enough time to keep in touch with old buddies. Is it just me or is that kinda stretching it. Well this is what i came up with and its a lil exagerated.
24 hours in a day
-8 Hours of sleep (none of u get that much)
-2 Hours to eat (none of you take that long to eat)
hmm i unno this varies -4 hours for class?
-4 hours a day for studying
-1 hour for working out (which some of u dont do)
that leaves u with 5 hours (actually more but we wont get into that) So is there something im missing? holla at cha boy
[]
Angie @ 11:58 AM [link]
you at first, i kept thinking, of course, we're always changing
but then i thought about it some more
maybe we aren't really changing at all
we are who we are
we like what we like
we are just discovering more that there is out there
but as we discover we are just detailing and defining who we are
we are providing more examples of who we are
that's not to say we can't change
maybe it's just because i'm not an advocator of change
but i think i'm still who i am, still the same beliefs
maybe i've grown, matured, seen more
oh yeah, kristan, it's powerless by nelly furtado
austinites: guess what, the weather is going to be cold tomorrow!!!
today in jewish culture&history we discussed marriages, subtopic mixed marriages
how much does race matter, or how much does religion matter
[]
Kristan @ 10:37 AM [link]
By chance, I was thinking about this too: have I changed?
But actually, I thought about it in the context of high school. And I thought of it like this: some people change during high school, and some people change as a result of high school. Which kind am I? Which kind are you?
To answer Ann's question via my angle, I think I'm changing during college. I'm learning to manage my own time, my own eating habits (boo, no mommy to cook for me) and my own happiness. (Among other important things, of course.) I'm obviously not fully independent by any means, but I've had to handle my own financial aid issues with the school, I got a job (though haven't started yet), and I've adjusted my work methods (i.e. began going to TA office hours) to improve. I'm still not great at paying attention in class (for example, I should be listening to my programming professor since he's telling us what's on the final right now), but I'm not the worst.
As far as the social aspect goes... my floor is definitely trying to corrupt me. But more than just making crude remarks and cursing a lot, they prod me to be less of a hermit and to try new things to have fun. Granted, I'm never going to see drinking, smoking, or doing drugs as "fun," but they're cool with that (and many agree with me anyway -- well, on the smoking and doing drugs). We're all goofy nerds anyway -- hey man, we're at a school with MELLON in its name -- enough said.
So yes, I think I'm changing, but I think it's for the better.
(And to answer my own question: I definitely changed in high school, probably as a result rather than just during. For better or worse... I would say somewhere inbetween, but closer to the worse side.)
(Thanks for bringing back the discussions guys. It was getting too quiet in here.)
[]
Matt @ 9:07 AM [link]
Howdy,
I think, if it's possible, that I may have gotten lazier. I don't have very much motivation and with nobody telling me that I have to do something I don't do anything.

i still don't know as much about adobe photoshop 7.0 as i should. grr. instead of trying to learn by messing around the programs, i should get around to actually reading manuals and directions (as i learned from Movable Type, which still kicks my ass...)
wylie--- aaah! SOO many. i LOVE 1000 oceans (which happens to be on the title bar of that page you saw) and silent all these years and winter and crucify and I Don't Like Mondays,
and her new stuff is GREAT unlike most artists. scarlet's walk would probably be a great album to buy if i get around to it. Taxi Ride is a great one, mostly because i saw her perform it on tv and i fell more in love with her ^^ not to mention that she is gorgeous.
kay i'll stop. but i'm curious as to what your favorite is :] what other kinds of music do you like?

I still say we only did 25 points worse than a team that was in the top 10 until they got beat by 52 points. Who ever heard of a top 10 team losing by 52 points? I hadn't until OU beat t.u. by that much. In the 21st century only one team from Texas has beaten OU. And that team is the Texas A&M AGGIES.

Hey guys, we got us a new member: WYLIE!! ^_^
You actual Rogers people know him. Welcome to phuzzymath.net, and welcome to CollegeNet!
Ann: Yeah, it really is a pretty campus! In fact, Pittsburgh is a really nice city; it'll just take about a century for it to lose its rep as a dirty old steel town. And "that place" where Albert was playing pool is New House, my dorm. ^_^ The one with elevators. Hehe, it's brand new (though most of our dorms have elevators -- one dorm, Mudge, is a mansion that was converted and then added on to!) as you can tell from the oh-so-creative name.
AWESOME Halloween costume pics, hahaha!
And yeah, plot-wise, Matrix 3 was okay (though wholly predictable -- nothing else would have satisfied audiences) but the dialogue was SO horrible and the effects were SUCH cop-outs!! I thought Matrix 2 was really good by comparison -- at least it didn't give me seizures! >_<
But whatever, because of the loose ends in Matrix 2, everyone pretty much has to see Matrix 3 anyway. Brilliant marketing strategy on their part: "Well, even if we suck it up big, they'll still come. Muahahaha!"
And Keanu Reeves STILL cannot act. (Trenchcoat looks mighty nice though, teehee.)

Thanks for the heads-up on the link, Julie. It's fixed now. ^_^
And HAHAHA about you clicking the annoying link, muahahaha.
And Matrix 3 is definitely not worth $10. I paid $8.50, sadly; max worth is like $6 (and that's just 'cause if you've seen 1 and 2, you can't not see the last one).
*sigh* Yet another sad report on our good ole HISD: link. (But then again, they said the superintendent's name is Kate, when it's really Kaye, soooo... *shrug*)

YOWZA ANN!! *faints from the heat* Warming up Massachusetts all on your own, eh? ^_~
My Halloween pics do not yet include any of me in my costume. >_< I'll remedy that ASAP.
But yeah, it does seem like in college, Halloween is less about "dressing up" and more about not dressing at all. O_o
And yeah, my super-annoying link isn't nearly as annoying if you have a GOOGLE TOOLBAR that blocks pop-ups. It was hilarious on Emma's computer though, 'cause it definitely took over. Hehehe, it was KER-AZY!
Mmm, dessert... Good quote, Windle.
Oh, and, uh, just a little heads-up: Matrix 3 (Revolutions) sucks like no other. -_-
No, really.

Okay guys, in ALL SERIOUSNESS, do NOT click this if you're in a bad mood/going to be easily frustrated. (Otherwise, click away, 'cause it's hilarious.)
And hey, I can't help it if you guys are idiots! ^_^

Wow $25!!!!! our homecomming ball was really nice, free food, free punch, (yes actual food chicken tenders and such with sauce) but the price was only $10 for spelman and morehouse students and $15 for anyone else. Man its expensive to party at UT =P And it was a really nice place (i guess since they sold all 1500 tickets they could afford to get a nice place). It was fun as kuanit.
P.S sorry i havent been posting lately but the internet has been down in our dorm only, that sucks major.... ya....

Looks like I get the graveyard shift all to myself. w00tage.
A lot of good sharing of views were posted this week. I would have shared mine earlier, but 1)didn't have time to coherently formulate my opinion, and 2) I'm still reeling a little bit since the last time I posted my somewhat against-the-grain view relating to a deep subject. I had used poor judgement in how I said what I felt (my wording wasn't the greatest). So, to end this paragraph, I'm glad Greg spoke up, and I am in agreement with his view.
Okay, now for the fun stuff. Halloween in Austin! Man, Austin-ites are hardcore about Halloween. It's essentially Mardi Gras down 6th street, just a little toned down and less obscene. Still very crowded with the most hilarious costumes ever. I've seen people dressed up as crayons, Mr. Clean, Bert and Ernie, Transformers, Neo and Trinity, a Scrabble Board, Wheel of fortune wheel...yeah, the creative list goes on. Almost got lost from my group, but found them l15 minutes later. Went to eat after 6th street, and now it's almost 5 a.m. Now I know why UT is considered the party school.
Fun Stuff.
Albert or Kristan, check the pm.net email, I sent a list of utilities that might prove useful to everyone here.
