soccer sunday? anyone up for that this sunday? (and yes your football and basketball....might as well throw in lacrosse eh?)
damn, lotr was loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong
but it was pretty good, except maybe because we were too close to the screen, that i found the fight scenes kind of blurred and confusing
rule of thumb in the movie: do not mess with the legs of the person sitting next to you...HINT HINT
how many people will be in town that weekend after christmas 27-28
or that monday tuesday wednesday before new year's time period??
michael: mmm quail (hahaha!)
hope you took your calculus final to the cleaners

i think we should have a tally of who is going to lotr
then a few people can get tickets, and the others can pay them back
but if you back out, you still owe ticket money
and we should play soccer!! come on, this nice weather isn't going to last forever!
[]
quentin @ 10:37 AM [link]
answer to lord of the rings. You get tickets earlier in the day, Im suggesting we see it around 9ish, but keeping the dinner thing around 6, so then wed have time to wait in line =). I love the line experience (not really) but its interesting.

Kristan @ 1:24 PM [link]
Thanks Steff. I've got plans underway, but I think I'll wait before unveiling them. Just to get a feel for what should be done.
I know we're all mourning, but let me be the first to say that it's okay to talk about things other than Mrs. Bunner here now. Not everyone had her, not everyone knew her, and anyways, she wouldn't want us to be sad forever. In fact, I think she woulda said one day (if even that) was enough, and now it's time to smile (and perhaps read a good book or two).
"Don't, like Sethe, dwell on what is past and can't be changed."
We can't change it -- the best thing we can do to honor her is to be happy (and work hard) 'cause that's all she ever wanted for us.
Anyone wanna go ice skating when we're all back?

Kristan @ 12:15 PM [link]
Or actually, I was talking to H about this last night, and we kinda thought that it was a horrible thing for Legacy.com to charge us $69 to keep the gbook open, and then $10 per picture. So maybe we should do it at phuzzymath.net, competely for free of course?
What do you guys think?
(We/I would have to ask for family permission, I believe, and I'd be willing to do that.)

i think she would be proud of the impact she had on everyone

Let the world know.
Question: do you guys think it would be worth taking up a collection to keep that (see above) permanent? Or do you think we could do something better on our own?
[]
rose @ 7:07 PM [link]
cross posted, but I had to say it again.
Ms. Bunner passed away yesterday, December 6th. I couldn't keep track of the number of people who called/messaged me about her death, but that alone reminds me of the number of lives she touched. I never left her class without a smile on my face. We all couldn't help but admire her continued cheerfulness and bravery, whether she was talking about literary devices or her own health.
rest in peace, Ms. Bunner. You are in our hearts.
always with a smile and ready for a hug.
[]
justin @ 6:28 PM [link]
I was JUST about to post that.
She was never my teacher, but I hear that she sure was one of the better ones. My condolences to her family, may they find strength while going through this rough time.

Some Final Thoughts:
Be as brave as Achilles, as loyal as Hector, and as dedicated as Aeneas. Walk conscientiously the stright road of life so you never awake to find yourself in a dark wood of confusion and regret, heading for the Inferno. But if you do, remember there's a way out - it depends on you. Remember what Creon and Antigone learned: fate does not rule your destiny; you make your own choices, and in the end you must take responsibility for them. Remember what Lear learned: love is not measured by words or money, and Daisy Miller: appearances do count. Discover the dark places of your own heart so you can triumph over them. Don't, like Sethe, dwell on what is past and can't be changed. Exorcise your ghosts and get on with it. Value hard work and tradition as Okonkwo did, but remember what Achebe taught us: compromise and tolerance are important to man and to society. And finally, don't, like Ivan Ilyich, waste your life in striving only for that which is pleasant and proper. Be instead, like Robert Frost, a swinger of birches. Climb the black branches up a snow white trunk toward heaven, but remember that "earth's the right place for love."

THIS IS THE TRUTH FOLKS
1. You must learn to pronounce the city name. It is Hugh-stun not Howstun.
2. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Houston has its own
version of traffic rules....Hold on and pray. There is no such thing
as a dangerous high-speed chase in Houston. They all drive like that.
3. All directions start with, "Go down to Loop 610... which has no beginning
and no end.
4. The Chamber of Commerce calls getting through traffic a "scenic drive."
5. The morning rush hour is from 6:00 to 10:00. The evening rush hour is
from 3:00 to 7:00. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning.
6. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear ended, cussed
out and possibly shot. When you are the first one on the starting line,
count to five when the light turns green before going to avoid getting into
any cross-traffic's way.
7. Kuykendahl Road can only be pronounced by a native.
8. Construction on I-10, I-45, US 59, Loop 610 is a way of life and a
permanent form of entertainment.
9. All unexplained sights are explained by the phrase, "Oh, we must be in
Pasadena!!"
10. If someone actually has their turn signal on, it is probably a factory
defect.
11. All old ladies with blue hair in pink Cadillacs have total
right of way.
12. The minimum acceptable speed on Loop 610 is 85. Anything less is
considered downright sissy.
13. The wrought iron on windows in east Houston is not ornamental.
14. Never stare at the driver of the car with the bumper sticker that says,
"Keep honking. I'm reloading." In fact, don't honk at anyone.
15. If you are in the left lane, and only going 70 in a 60 mph zone people
are not waving when they go by.
16. The Sam Houston Toll road is our daily version of NASCAR.
17. If it's 100 degrees, Thanksgiving must be next weekend.
****
You know you're from Houston if...
The "farm-to-market" roads have seven lanes.
You have to turn on the air conditioning in January, two days after a low of
29 degrees.
Everybody has a story of the Flying Roach the size of the Taco Bell
Chihuahua.
You're on your way to work one FEBRUARY morning and suddenly you're trapped
in a traffic jam caused by a chuck wagon and fifty horses - with riders and
you look around to see that everybody in the trucks around you is wearing a
cowboy hat.
The name "Bud Adams" makes people snarl, and "Bum Phillips" doesn't mean bad
screwdriver.
"Luv ya ! Blue" still makes you smile, even if you did run the
Oilers out of town.
You know that the Astrodome will always be the Eighth Wonder of the World.
You come to work in short sleeves and walk out at noon to find that a "blue
norther" has blown through and the temperature has dropped 40 degrees.
Your neighbor's Christmas yard decorations are a re-creation of
The gunfight at the OK Corral, complete with a ten-foot tree decorated with
boots and cowboy hats, and a Santa Claus who looks a lot like Wyatt Earp.
You wander into a section of town where you can't read the street signs
because they're written in Asian characters instead of English, but you
don't care because you can get great prices on fake designer merchandise.
You hear everything but English spoken when you go to the Galleria to window
shop. (You can't afford to buy because the prices are jacked up for all the
foreign tourists.)
You know that "Dad gummit" has nothing to do with your father's failure to
practice good dental hygiene.
You think "Y'all" is perfectly good usage if you're referring to more than
one person.
Spring is not the season, Katy is not the lady, and 1960 is not the year.
You can leave your house, head out of town, and an hour later you still
haven't left the city limits. (During rush hour, you haven't left your
NEIGHBORHOOD.)
You've never seen I-45 and I-10 in any condition other than under
construction - and you've lived here for more than 30 years.
You know that "Clutch City" has nothing to do with automobile transmissions.
"The Dream" is not a fantasy.
The only REAL Mexican food is Tex-Mex.
A 747 with the Space Shuttle riding piggyback has actually flown low right
overhead, and nobody paid any attention to it.
You know that while saving you money, "Mattress Mac" has amassed more than
the U.S. treasury.
You see nothing unusual about an eighty-something former sheriff's deputy
who wears a white pompadour toupee and blue sunglasses, mispronounces names,
allows televising of his frequent plastic surgeries, seems unnaturally
obsessed with slime in the ice machine, and screams, "MAR-VIN ZIND-ler,
iiiii-witness news" into a television camera every night. But some folks are
still upset with him for shutting down the Chicken Ranch.
If the humidity is below 90 percent, it's a GOOD hair day

when are we all going to be back in Houston?? UT gets out on the 17th, so I'm guessing that weekend would be cutting it close. It looks like the weekend after Christmas or after New Years. And does a lot of people mean that a person's house is out of the question??
And while we're thinking ahead, I keep getting this wacky idea that a road trip to College Station and Austin is a feasible plan. Since we never got to road trip in the summer, maybe a winter road trip would be better. certainly would be a lot cooler temperature wise.
