HoustonChronicle.com - Cardinals to shine in district play <--- Amanda Tong is mentioned briefly

Now for the real reason I came here. It's very important, and I've been disagreeing with people (who are very obviously wrong : P).

Who's hotter, Jessica Alba or Beyonce?

Okay, this is actually part of a book review, but the last sentence in this paragraph kind of threw me. It's like, 'Um, was that really necessary??'

The New York Times > Books > Sunday Book Review > 'Snow': Headscarves to Die For

The twists of fate, the plots that double back on themselves, the trickiness, the mysteries that recede as they're approached, the bleak cities, the night prowling, the sense of identity loss, the protagonist in exile -- these are vintage Pamuk, but they're also part of the modern literary landscape. A case could be made for a genre called the Male Labyrinth Novel, which would trace its ancestry through De Quincey and Dostoyevsky and Conrad, and would include Kafka, Borges, Garcia Marquez, DeLillo and Auster, with the Hammett-and-Chandler noir thriller thrown in for good measure. It's mostly men who write such novels and feature as their rootless heroes, and there's probably a simple reason for this: send a woman out alone on a rambling nocturnal quest and she's likely to end up a lot deader a lot sooner than a man would.

Soooo... haha, who agrees with that and who doesn't?

Update:

The house is called sea watch, at 21402 Gulf Drive, Galveston Texas. Some simple directions are go to the Sea Wall make a right and drive 15 miles Then make a Left on Gulf Drive. You need to bring your own towel and maybe you might want to bring a change of clothes. Also if you can bring a folding/beach/camping/whatever chair. And if you are spending the night sleeping bag and maybe air mattress.

Oh snap, I sense trouble...

The New York Times > National > New Doubt Cast on Crime Testing in Houston Cases

Six independent forensic scientists, in a report to be filed in a Houston state court today, said that a crime laboratory official - because he either lacked basic knowledge of blood typing or gave false testimony - helped convict an innocent man of rape in 1987.

The panel concluded that crime laboratory officials might have offered 'similarly false and scientifically unsound' reports and testimony in other cases, and it called for a comprehensive audit spanning decades to re-examine the results of a broad array of rudimentary tests on blood, semen and other bodily fluids.

I wonder... Shouldn't they double-check these kinds of things? I mean, if not by sending it out to another, unrelated lab, then at least in-house? Have two scientists run the same tests and see if they come out the same, or whatever. Seems to me like it should be simple. Even if it is costly or time-consuming or whatnot. It's important enough that I think those factors shouldn't really outweight the end results. But maybe that's just me.

The official whose testimony was challenged, James Bolding, said in a telephone interview that he did not recall the particular case. But Mr. Bolding said that both his scientific work and his testimony were always careful and professional. When he testified in 1987, he was the supervisor of the laboratory's serology unit. He later became the head of its DNA unit.

His testimony helped convict George Rodriguez, who has served 17 years for raping a 14-year-old girl in 1987. DNA results have now cleared him, according to court-ordered testing, and the papers to be filed today will seek his release.

Okay, I'm not saying that he's guilty, but one thing I wanted to mention is that DNA is regarded as such a highly infallible piece of evidence, but... it really isn't. Honestly, I forget where exactly I heard/read it, but just presence of DNA doesn't necessarily prove guilt, absence of it doesn't necessarily prove innocence either. You know how things can look one way when they really are another? Yeah, it's like that. So yeah, I think instead of relying on DNA so much for criminal cases nowadays, they really ought to piece together an entire scenario. (CSI-style. : P)

(For example, if you read the middle of the second page of the article, you'll see that this DNA evidence reeeeally should have been questioned. Like woah. 'Cause it seems to me that this guy was pretty obviously innocent.)

Barry Scheck, one of Mr. Rodriguez's lawyers, said that Harris County was the worst place in America for a crime laboratory scandal. [...] Since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, Texas has executed 323 people, 73 for crimes in Harris County.

Hmm, yeah, that sucks big butt. 'Cause we (TX) are gonna get flamed for this... : / Whatever. I still have my Lone Star pride!

Haha, US News asked people "What do you consider the most important element of John Kerry's Vietnam War days?"

- He served, winning several medals
- He returned to lead the protests against the war

You can view the results here.

And for anyone who hasn't already seen it, JibJab is a must. (Thanks for the link Matt!)

Two days until the beach...!!! ^_^
