Angie @ 9:37 PM [link]
i'm just going to say this, bush is immature and kerry is unassertive
the debate today on iraq was soooo redundant...da...da...da
interesting, kerry plays offensively, while bush strikes defensively
giuliani, made an intersting point, (granted bias) kerry lectured to the people, whiel bush talked, granted kerry is more poised and bush childish and nervous
but i loved the last 'loaded' question that basically asked in laymen terms, what sucks about your opponent, haha, neither would be mean enough to mudsling
two things:
I BOUGHT ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND on dvd!!!
and mitza and i made orgasmically good banana bread
(ohhh yes, yes, yes the bread, oh yes, mmm ,oh oh, the bread!)

And now I'll take this opportunity to remind everyone to go online and get your ballots-by-mail if you need to. Time is passing quickly!
(Below: the part I quoted pretty much summarizes everything from the article.)
The New York Times > Washington > Campaign 2004 > Absentee Votes: Hurdles Remain for American Voters Who Live Overseas:
Four years after overseas voting became a battleground in the presidential election in Florida, millions of civilians and soldiers living abroad still face a bewildering and unwieldy system of absentee balloting that could prevent their votes from being counted.
Election officials concede that tens of thousands of Americans overseas might not get ballots in time to cast votes. Late primaries and legal wrangling caused election offices in at least 8 of the 15 swing states to fail to mail absentee ballots by Sept. 19, a cutoff date officials say is necessary to ensure that they can be returned on time, a survey by The New York Times shows. In Florida in 2000, late-arriving ballots became a divisive issue when some were counted and others were disqualified.
The tardy ballots are just one of several setbacks or missteps that have affected the ability of the estimated 4.4 million eligible voters overseas to participate in the presidential election. Some have been unable to send their registrations to a Pentagon contractor's computers, which are clogged by thousands of voter forms. Others were denied access to a Web site designed to help Americans abroad vote. And many voters simply have had trouble navigating the rules and methods that determine how and when to register and vote and that vary by state.
'I found it so convoluted I gave up,' says Alex Campos, a management consultant in London who repeatedly tried to register using the Pentagon program, without success.
To help speed the balloting process, federal officials activated a new system last week in which voters can obtain absentee ballots instantly through the Internet. But the Web site, myballot.mil, will be offered only to members of the military and their families, quickly raising concerns about fairness in a program that the Pentagon has been directed to run for civilians as well. In addition, 23 states have already declined to join the system for various reasons, including security, according to Pentagon and state officials.

Kind of related to Olivia's post about bias, and to Angie's past posts about media coverage: does it bother anyone else to think that we're all being played? I mean, the conventions, the commercials, everything is bombarding us with images that are designed to evoke certain emotional responses, which in turn affect the way we think about certain issues and people. I don't like the idea of being manipulated, and yet... it seems like there's no way to avoid it.
Anyway...
The New York Times > Washington > Campaign 2004 > The Campaign: In Harshest Critique Yet, Kerry Attacks Bush Over War in Iraq
The 47-minute speech was Mr. Kerry's most stinging critique to date of what he called Mr. Bush's 'colossal failures of judgment' on Iraq. Mr. Kerry also laid out, as he has before, four broad steps that he urged Mr. Bush to take immediately: repair alliances, train Iraqi security forces, improve reconstruction and ensure elections. If all that happened, Mr. Kerry said, 'we could begin to withdraw U.S. forces starting next summer, and realistically aim to bring our troops home within the next four years.'
Well, okay, yes. BUT you really think all that can happen in 1 year? Bureaucratic red tape alone will take 6 months, I'm sure. Plus...
"Forty-three days before the election, my opponent has now settled on a proposal for what to do next," Mr. Bush said there, "and it's exactly what we're currently doing."
Yeah. I mean, DUH. It's not like he's trying to prolong US involvement there, seriously. No matter how dumb or dishonest you think he is, I don't think anyone believes he's cruel like that.
(He does, however, portray Iraq QUITE unrealistically. It is not a nation "that 'has rejoined the community of nations' and is well on the way to being "secure, democratic, federal and free.'" Not even close.)
But whatever. Personally, I think the election's focus needs to shift anyways. All this talk about Iraq goes nowhere. Disputes about war records: pointless. Just tell me if you're gonna give old people their medicine, tax my parents, kill the planet, etc. Let me know who you'll pick if a spot on the Supreme Court opens up.
I think it's hard to strike the right balance between foreign and domestic affairs. But I think Bush has focused too much on the former, not enough on the latter; and Kerry... *shakes head* he's just running around trying to stay in this race. (I guess I like him well enough, but his advisers kinda suck.)

The New York Times > Washington > Campaign 2004 > The Reform Party: Florida Supreme Court Gives Nader a Spot on State Ballot
The Florida Supreme Court bolstered President Bush's prospects in this swing state on Friday, ruling that Ralph Nader could appear on the November ballot as the Reform Party's presidential candidate.
In a case, and a setting, that instantly evoked memories of the recount battle of 2000, the court rejected Democratic arguments that the Reform Party had not met state requirements for receiving a ballot line. The court's majority concluded that those requirements were vague, but that it would be unfair to punish the Reform Party for the law's weaknesses.
Wow, does anyone else totally not buy that?
Mr. Nader is now on the ballot in 27 states, his campaign said, including several closely contested states like Florida, Iowa, New Hampshire and West Virginia. He could appear on the ballot in more than a dozen other states, pending litigation, they said.
"We're very pleased," Theresa Amato, Mr. Nader's campaign manager, said of the Florida decision. "This gives Florida voters more voices, more choices."
*shakes head* I'm sorry, but no. "More choices" is not what they're getting, 'cause a vote for Nader is definitely a wasted vote. As idealistic as I'd like to be, there's no way that a third party candidate is going to win an election in the U.S. Not unless something... just utterly ridiculous and drastic happened. So all Nader's doing is distracting the voters, basically, and taking (important) votes away from the other candidates. (And I think we all know that it's Kerry who's really getting screwed here.)

The New York Times > Washington > Campaign 2004 > Democrats Seek Louder Voice From Edwards
'When George Bush or Dick Cheney have said something that is outrageous - and they've done that a number of times - I responded strongly and quickly,' he [Edwards] said. 'When they've lied about John Kerry, I've responded strongly and quickly.'
I think what politicians often forget is just because they say it, and it makes it to print, that doesn't mean it's true.
Why AREN'T Kerry & Edwards defending themselves? Or really, just Kerry, 'cause no one's attacking Edwards yet. But anyway... yeah, I do have a certain amount of respect for them for not doing a lot of negative campaigning. However, I guess it comes down to this: is it better to sit back and take the words your enemy flings at you so as not to appear rude and desperate as well? Or should you "fight back," defend yourself and your position, even if it means you will be drawing more attacks and criticism?

The New York Times > National > 14 Governors Receive Mail That's Rigged With Matches
Envelopes containing matches that were rigged to ignite when opened have been received through the mail at the offices of at least 14 state governors in the last two days.
Apparently the envelopes contained a plain white paper and a match affixed in a way so that when opened, they might ignite. (Considering I can't make matches light even when I'm holding them...) Not a very effective way of harming someone, so I'm guessing that the real intention was just to make a statement.
The governors who were sent the envelopes are Democrats and Republicans alike. In addition to Mr. Romney, of Massachusetts, and Ms. Martz, of Montana, they are George E. Pataki of New York, Rick Perry of Texas, Dirk Kempthorne of Idaho, Mike Johanns of Nebraska, Gary Locke of Washington, Olene S. Walker of Utah, Bill Owens of Colorado, Theodore R. Kulongoski of Oregon, Dave Freudenthal of Wyoming, Kenny Guinn of Nevada, Linda Lingle of Hawaii and Janet Napolitano of Arizona.
Now the question is, what do they all have in common? (No, I don't have the answer, lol, I'm wondering.)
